Named ‘Food of the Gods’ in ancient civilisations and known as a superfood today and for good reason, cacao offers more benefits than you can imagine! To name a few; Cacao is a natural mood elevator – triggering the bliss chemicals in your brain known as serotonin dopamine and anadamine. It has been studied and is becoming more known that including cacao in your diet combats anxiety and depression as well.
After enjoying some good quality cacao you can expect to feel euphoric, relaxed and… maybe even a little in love! Cacao contains tryptophan, one of the building blocks of serotonin (also a brain chemical that makes you feel all the love) and phenylethylamine (PEA), released in the brain when you are falling in love.
Raw cacao is rich in a myriad of nutrients; Such as magnesium, a key component of a happy and healthy heart. Iron, which is one of the most neglected nutrients in modern day culture.
Other minerals such as calcium, zinc, copper, potassium, manganese and chromium to name a few. If antioxidants are what you’re after, did you know that cacao contains the highest amount of flavonoids (class of antioxidant) by weight compared to any other food! Good to know and include in your diet if you are looking to reduce high blood pressure and inflammation.

Maca is know for its adaptogenic properties aiding in all things from anxiety, stress & depression, and improves hormone and sexual health as well, basically you can use it for your all round system upgrade!
1⁄2 a papaya
1⁄2 – 1 frozen banana (depending on how hungry you are )
1⁄4 frozen avocado (optional)
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 teaspoon maca
1⁄2 – 1 cup nut milk (oat milk is also magical)
A hint of vanilla extract
A hint of cinnamon
Add toppings to make this smoothie extra amazing – melted chocolate, a drizzle nut butter, grated dark chocolate, cacao nibs/chips, toasted coconut are all super delicious!
Always start with less liquid (the nut milk in this recipe) and add bit by bit to get your desired consistency.
Add all ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. Add milk bit by bit until you get your desired consistency.
Pour into a smoothie glass / bowl and top up with your heart’s desires.
